Peristaltic tube pump for dosing methadone

Peristaltic tube pump for dosing methadone

Methadone is a narcotic pain reliever, which is similar to morphine. Methadone reduces withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to heroin and other narcotic drugs without causing the 'high' associated with the drug addiction.

Methadone is used as part of drug addiction detoxification and maintenance programs. A supervised methadone dosing service can provide drug addicts with their daily dose of methadone in the presence of a pharmacist, therapist or prison officer.

The method is highly successful in attempting to prevent further use of morphine or heroine by a recovering addict. Dispensing the methadone manually is a relatively high risk, costly and a time-consuming procedure.  Semi-automatic dispensing by using a tube dosing pump can help but automated dispensing is preferred.

An English company has developed a fast and automatic method of administering methadone. The dispensing system first identifies the patient by fingerprint and uses a peristaltic tube pump to measure the exact dose of methadone for the patient. A record of the event is automatically saved.

The accuracy of the peristaltic tube pump and the reliability of the system are of absolute importance, which meant careful specification of compenentry for the dosing unit. The peristaltic tube pump that was chosen was the Verderflex M500 peristaltic tube pump - a robust tube pump with a proven track record for a variety of applications. including vending, chemical dosing and condensate removal.  The peristaltic pump has a flow rate of up 730 ml/min.

There is no internal backflow on the M500  tube pump, ensuring accurate dosing without slip and provides a repeatability of typically ±0.2% and a metering capability of ±2%.   This performance meets the stipulations of both the Weights and Measures and new Medicines Act and therefore makes it the ideal choice for this methadone dosing unit.

The Verderflex peristaltic tube pump has a patented, seal-less design which minimized any potential contamination. Only the tube comes into contact with the methadone.  The tube itself was also selected to be resistant to the acidity of the methadone. The simplicity of the pump design makes it easy and quick to exchange the tube in the field.
